deerstalker p. 20:  a wool cap with a visor in front and in back, and earflaps tied on top

dung beetles  p.38: beetles up to 6 inches long, that make herbivore dung into balls and roll it away from the pile to bury it for lunch later (usually just suck the juice out of it)  

escargot  p8:  a French recipe for edible snails

landed estate  p.26:  a mansion in the country on a lot of acres

onsen (Johnson's Onsen) p.56:  a Japanese resort built around a natural source of hot mineral water that has been made into a pool-sized hot tub.  The author's maiden name is Johnson, and she loved Matsushima's hot tub resort!

Paul Bunyan Land  p.74:  an amusement park in Minnesota that features a huge models of the lumberjack and his blue ox, plus a lot of rides.  Established in 1954   

Phoebe & Phobi  p. 56:  "Fee-Bee & Fo-Bee"  Phoebe is a goddess type, strong and self-assured, and Phobi has phobias that hold him back in life  

pretzel quetzals  p.10:  pretzels made of rotting T-Rex, croc, and raptor

saki  p.58:  Japan's national beverage, a rice wine warmed in a small pot and sipped from a little teacup

seaway  p.40: the Western Interior Seaway was a relatively shallow (600 ft) sea that stretched from the top to the bottom of North America in the Late Cretaceous period  There were mosasaurs and plesiosaurs and squalicorax (sharks) swimming around in it.

Sherlock Holmes  p. 16: a famous fictional detective, created in the 1800's for a series of stories

Spock  p. 19:  a character in the Star Trek series who had an alien appearance (pointy ears, but Quoc has no ears...)

St. Paul  p. 9:  capital city of Minnesota, with lots of parks and restaurants, beside the Mississippi River

Stradivarius  p. 21:  violin made by the Stradivari familiy back in the 1600's, praised for its clarity and rich sound

ultrasound  p. 16: an exam using sound waves to travel through fluids and bounce off solids, making an image of the solid thing to view on a screen or printout

vibrato  p. 17:  wavering up and down in pitch

walleye  p.9:  a very large lake fish (up to 25 lbs) native to lakes in the Northern US and Canada, delicious pan fried

Write your own graphic novel

  1. Come up with ideas.

  2. How do you want to make the pictures?   Draw, paint, collage, photograph, etc.

  3. Google your subject.  Keep links to best sites for your information.  

  4. Create the characters and the setting;  if using photos for illus. you need to actually craft them with bendable limbs.

  5. Write the story. Try using rhymezone online for synonyms.

  6. Rewrite. 

  7. Illustrate:  divide each page into a 2 to 8 parts, put in the words for each part, make pictures. Leave at least an inch blank on each side, so you can staple it.

  8. Think of a title and make your title page with a picture.

  9. Make your front cover and back cover.

  10. Staple together
